Azami Optiek In The Hague

Chic Boutique with Personality

1st September 2012 As I stepped out of the taxi at the entrance to a flower filled street in The Hague, I realised I was in one of those wonderful locations about which people dream to open a business. Azami Optiek is a spacious, elegant shop just steps from the golden gates of Queen Beatrix’s Palace. A protected pedestrian zone, flowers line the street, and the lovely atmosphere continues when you enter Azami’s shop, with its openness and fresh approach to eyewear. It was really a pleasure to enter this tranquil eyewear oasis, and receive a friendly welcome from Bijan Azami and his capable staff.

“When the shop was designed, it had to reflect me – my personality,” says Azami, “and I wanted this reflection of me, and the way I want to do business – it wasn’t about selling.  It is helping to choose – that is different. It’s like being a guide: for many people eyewear is a new field. When you connect with the person, you can feel what they want.” The boutique has a family history, about which Azami is proud and happy to relate. “Actually, before I opened the boutique, it was a Persian carpet shop for thirty years, that belonged to my father. He was going to step down, and thought it would be a good location for an optical shop. My father helped me with many of the non-optical things in the shop, so he continued to be active. It was a gift to work with him; we were companions, and had a good five years together, before he passed away.”

Azami brings the same precision to his selection of eyewear, as he did in creating the lovely interior to present the collections. “When I choose a brand, I look for quality, good design, continuity of the brand, and the service of the brand,” he says, “and these are the prerequisites, plus an identity. We have only independent designers here – Face à Face, Anne & Valentine, Dita, Reiz, Rolf, Cutler & Gross, Derome Brenner, Mykita and more. There are different reasons why opticians choose a brand, including innovation — it’s an ongoing process, including the creation our own designs as well, in buffalo horn and acetate.”

Elegance and refinement at Azami Optiek

Azami clients come from all walks of life, and word-of-mouth has proven highly successful. “The customer IS the brand,” declares Azami, “and the frames in our shop have no logos, no labels. Our customers come to use for their exam- we have the best machines – quality, the products, service, expertise, advice – and that is why they come to us. We are still doing well, even in this economy.”

Azami’s passion for eyewear goes beyond fashion and frames – he believes that there needs to be more information about eye health and care to underdeveloped nations. “Do you know that one billion people could be helped? I want to bring sight to people.” He is actively working on a programme to provide basic techniques in education and health, plus organising micro credit to countries were sight problems are particularly prevalent. “The inner cannot be without the outer, and design cannot be without meaning. The eyes are the mirror of the soul, and glasses are more than an instrument to see better.” www.azami.nl JG

Ottica iSee

Super statement eyewear!

6th August 2012 Ottica iSee is in Santa Maria degli Angeli, just near the pretty medieval town of Assisi in Italy. The store concentrates on special labels like BlueMagicEye, Claire Goldsmith, Massada and Ksubi. I recently saw their window, a work of art featuring colourful, giant specs. Owner Alessio Brunozzi explained that he selected the shapes and had them printed on paper. A carpenter helped them cut the five different spectacle shapes from wood sheets and they were painted in bright colours. It was intensive work, says Alessio, but clearly worthwhile. www.ottica-isee.it CN

Barton Perreira Nashville Tennessee

California Eyewear Duo Open in “Music City”

1st August 2012 Nashville is the trendy American city affectionately known as “The Music City” and is the delightful setting for the chic, new boutique opened by Barton Perreira. Certain areas of Nashville are so sought after, that Bill Barton commented: “We were on a waiting list for two years to get this particular street, and we are very proud to open in Nashville. It’s an exciting city with old world charm and soul. The city offers so much diversity – music (ALL TYPES!) arts, food, great colleges, etc. Nashville seems to be a place more and more people are attracted to, because it’s a great place to live. We are also very fortunate to be partnering with opticians Inga Brittingham and Carla Carpenter. The girls make buying eyewear a fantastic experience. They have a great eye for what looks good, and they are both accomplished opticians.”

The shop is located in the centre of Nashville’s luxury shopping district, where many unusual restaurants and bars can be found, and attracts local residents, as well as international clientele. Architect David Spinelli, who also created the Aspen, Colorado store Barton Perreira opened last year, designed the Nashville boutique as well. “We chose to work with David again because he intrinsically understands the brand and our design philosophy,” Barton says. The interior of the boutique is open and airy, with beautiful wood and streamlined displays for the Barton Perriera collection. Inga and Carla add: “We make fitting eyewear fun and love to make our clients feel at home. But best of all, we love to see them in beautiful frames!” Barton Perreira Green Hills Nashville, TN 37215 www.bartonperreira.com JG

Brillenschneiderei, Berlin

1st July 2012 I first heard about Brillenschneiderei a few months ago, and I am really a big fan of their whole boutique concept. They stock superior brands like L.G.R., Vuerich B, and Oscar Magnusson as well as their own label, Brillenschneiderei Yves. They offer a very carefully selected choice of good quality frames that they believe will “bring out the personality of the wearer.”

The store was opened in 2010 by the current owner, 37 year old Yves-Jens Leipe. Located in Berlin Mitte, Gormannstraße 8,  the interior is completely enclosed by glass, a point which Yves says helps customers see the colours and shapes of the frames he has quite perfectly. The photos we have show an eye-catching red female statue and a smaller figure in a pink dress in the window, the work of a local artist.

What’s the buzz around Brillenschneiderei? Located in a street nicknamed “FashionWeek Street”, its clientele are local and international and have an interest in great design. Designed by Michael Lange, the prize-winning interior is created from glass, cement and palisander (also known as Brazilian rosewood). CN

L’Artisan du Regard

Cheerful Parisian Optical Boutique

1st June 2012 A lovely friend visiting from Switzerland introduced me to this delightful Parisian boutique – it’s always fun to discover something wonderful virtually on your own doorstep! L’Artisan du Regard is located in the 9th arrondissement of Paris, on a totally charming street, with the atmosphere and tempting shops of a little village. “I adore the 9th arrondissement, and la rue des Martyrs has the true spirit of the artisan,” explains optician and boutique owner Grègory Vissac, “and there are very few franchises in the street – which is more and more rare”. L’Artisan du Regard opened in 2008, and the architecture was created by Fréderi Tabary from Nantes, on the West coast of France. The environment is stylish and very personal with a warm ambience – uplifting orange, green plants – and most of all, gorgeous frames. To feel really at home, Socrate, Grègory’s four-footed friend, waits at the front door to welcome visitors.

Vissac’s philosophy is that glasses are something you carry with you and usually wear all day long, so it is important that frames permit the wearer to express their individual style. “We offer a large selection of frames with a variety of materials that are ‘avant-gardiste’. We feature Anne et Valentin, Thierry Lasry, Caroline Abram, Thierry Lasry, Masunaga, Design Natural, Paul Frank, Mikli and Starck, Pierre Eyewear, and Michel Klein. We truly want frames to be a pleasure, and for the client to really fall in love with something.”. L’Artisan du Regard, 35 rue Martyrs, 75009 Paris.  www.artisanduregard.com JG
