Design Miami: See A Clean Future

The shift towards eco trends and sustainability is a continuing story in eyewear, with many new examples of eco-friendly innovations, greater sustainable focus in companies or more focused recycling endeavours in product and packaging.

One of the latest to launch is art initiative + e-commerce platform “One. All Every.” who has teamed with RVS Eyewear and Ugo Rondinone to launch See A Clean Future,  a line of colorful sustainable sunglasses, designed to raise awareness of environmental issues and climate change. The collection debuted at Design Miami in Basel Switzerland (the booth was made from wood and earth, pictured above) and is available for a limited period until June 2020.

Sunglasses designed by RVS Eyewear founder Vidal Erkohen

The frames consist of the innovative materials from the Italian Mazzucchelli company using their M49 bio-plastic, which is eco-friendly, recyclable, and biodegradable. The bioplastic is produced from cotton linters and wood fibers, which are purified into a pulp and then transformed into a resin known as M49. (www.mazzucchelli1849.it)

Sunglasses with eco-aware packaging

All metal inlays as well as temple hinges in the sunglasses are made of a recyclable stainless steel. The steel is coated with ion plating which protects the surface and allows the engraving of the frames. Ion plating is a physical vapor deposition process that uses concurrent or periodic bombardment of the substrate with aluminium, which is recyclable and non-toxic to the environment.

The sunglass lenses revert back to the traditional use of glass. According to the project directors, glass lenses are not only more environmentally sustainable but also ensure precision clarity and a refined aesthetic.

Packaging by Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone

Artist Ugo Rondinone’s designs are applied to the case and box containers, which are made from recycled cardboard and eco-friendly paper, made in London. Additionally, exhibition and furniture design at Design Miami consist of non-toxic and bio materials. The project supports the work of the Jane Goodall Institute, the Green Belt Movement and the E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation. For more information: www.oneallevery.com CN

Blackfin & Bocelli: Musical philanthropy

His voice, charisma and courage are recognised worldwide. Andrea Bocelli’s tenor renditions in opera and on records have charmed and captivated millions. Bocelli, (above image) completely blind since he was twelve years old, launched the Andrea Bocelli foundation that he created so people “can find energy and real opportunities to give the best of themselves expressing their potential.” The concept of the Foundation is to support and help give the most vulnerable members of society a “voice” of their own, and new opportunities.

Blackfin, the fine quality creator of beautiful eyewear designed and produced in Italy, continues the company’s philanthropic work with their support of the Andrea Bocelli Foundation. Blackfin has been active with the Foundation since 2015, and has also been a long-time supporter of Voices of Haiti, an impressive and accomplished choir of sixty talented children aged between nine and fifteen, who come from some of the poorest areas of Port-au-Prince. Thanks to music, the members of the choir have found a musical way of escaping violence and poverty, working hard to develop their talent. The young music enthusiasts follow a structured course of study with tenacity and discipline, and they achieved a successful objective – together. Voices of Haiti are featured on the Maestro’s latest musical project – his album “Si” – a musical celebration of family, love, faith and hope.

Blackfin commented: “It is a great honour for us to support the Andrea Bocelli Foundation, and we are particularly excited to see – and hear – the magic of these youngsters who, under the guidance of Andrea Bocelli, have been given the chance of a new life. It is a message of hope and values.” Discover more about the Foundation and Blackfin at: www.andreabocellifoundation.org www.blackfin.eu JG

L.G.R: open in Rome

Luca Gnecci Ruscone has opened a second L.G.R store in Rome, the city he grew up in and home to his sunglasses and eyewear company. Like L.G.R in Milan, the chic individual design takes inspiration from the atmosphere of Ottica Bini, the store which Luca’s grandfather, Raffaello Bini, ran in Asmara (Eritrea, Africa) between the 1930s and the 70s. It was in that store, in 2005, that Luca discovered some old and elegant frames dating back to the 40s. He then decided to take them to Italy to embark on a new business venture.

This combination of Italy and Africa, which represents the brand DNA, is part of every detail of the store. Wooden furniture and coconut elements have been carefully and elegantly manufactured by Italian craftsmen, while the fabrics and the chandelier designed by L.G.R have been made in Morocco. The wooden display niches in Venetian Neo-Gothic style have been inspired by the windows of the old Ottica Bini as has the colour palette of sand, green and turquoise. On the walls, the evocative illustrations by Giampiero Celani Piendlbach embellish the environment.

Artist’s impression: L.G.R Rome, Via della Fontanella di Borghese

“After Milan, opening a store in Rome was my priority, not only for commercial purposes, but also for personal reasons. I grew up in Rome, it is my home, this is where our company has its headquarters. We are determined to grow and in the future we plan to open other monobrand stores in Italy – Florence may be the next one – and abroad.” says Luca Gnecchi Ruscone, Founder and CEO of the brand.

The new store presents the 2019 collection of sunglasses and eyewear, with L.G.R highlights such as Reunion and Asmara (Explorer line) and the new exclusive limited edition, RAW #2. L.G.R., Via della Fontanella di Borghese, Rome www.lgrworld.com CN

Luna by Lara D’ : Diamond collection

Designer Lara d’Alpaos started her career in architecture in Northern Italy. Today, following family tradition, she produces artisan eyewear in acetate, stainless steel and beta titanium using the traditional craftsmanship and expertise of local artisans in Belluno, Italy. With a focus on pure glamour, the Diamond collection – a new craft oriented luxury line – puts emphasis on architectural structures within her design repertoire, adding a rich, sparkling effect through the application of a diamond powder coating on the front of the frames. Model Luna, a round design inspired by the curves of the moon (the name Luna meaning “moon” in Italian), is one of three shapes with double rims on the upper fronts and the dazzling luxury shimmer effect – which produces a light, feminine finish to what are sophisticated statement designs.
