Pege

Vinylize Hungary

Music, ecology and hand craftsmanship are the keynotes at innovative Vinylize in Hungary. The frames are made from recycled vinyl records, scoured from flea markets and antique shops. The very rich texture and distinctive grooves ensure a totally unique design. Pege (above) is named after the famous Hungarian jazz musician Aladar Pege. With its bold shape and spark of colour detailing on the frame interior, the glasses are a cool and contemporary tribute to the late virtuoso, and symbolic of the artisan spirit at Vinylize. www.vinylize.com JG

Montreal

RockOptika

Tom Herrington, the British designer and creator of RockOptika, has a passion for no-fuss designs with clean lines using top-notch acetate. One of our favourites from the label’s 2013 collection is this well proportioned style named “Montreal” that has individuality and flair. Tom says it is inspired by the 1970’s Alfa Romeo and while I am no car expert I get how the shape and lines pay homage to this super hip automobile.  I popped into RockOptika headquarters this month and had a little peek at this one which is the pure black, but I would also recommend the tortoiseshell and the slightly more decadent black with tangerine. Available at The Eye Place, Haverstock Hill www.the-eye-place.co.uk and Occhio in Stockholm – www.occhiooptik.se. For further stockists see the website: www.rockoptika.co.uk CN

Vanni Solid

VANNI / NICO DESIGN

Vanni has created this line of frames in solid plain-tone acetate that work really well. The colours are stunning and the shapes included tend to be quite broad and trendy. These are made exclusively in Italy with colours ranging from ‘energy’ orange, ‘dreamer’ pink, and ’emotive’ turquoise to ‘creative’ purple. We’ve seen the full collection and we were very impressed with the freshness of the colour presentation. www.vanniocchiali.com CN

Mylon RX

Mykita’s Mylon material has gained much praise for its lightness, adjustability and design potential. No surprise then that they have launched Mykita Mylon spectacles, which have thinner rims than you would expect (if you’ve seen the sunglasses) and to the touch, feel soft and smooth. The colour that stands out in my view is Ocean Blue (centre, above, named Pantara), but this material also has a strong fashion feel in Pitch Black and the more unusual Racing Green www.mykita.com CN

LDStäel O5 Walnut

Lucas de Stäel

Paris based Lucas de Stäel recently launched his own eyewear collection – and swiftly won a Silmo d’Or for 2012. “Once Upon a Time” is the result of two years of intensive research and testing before unveiling the collection. De Stäel is fascinated with industrial processes, and his goal is to achieve a perfect balance between flexibility, lightness, classicism and purist. The frame above – in smooth polished walnut achieves those goals with its refined, graceful shape, and delicate details. www.undostrial.com JG
