Blue Magic Eye

Since Guya Montermini and Ciro Tugnoli launched their eyewear collection several years ago, I’ve been following their design evolution with great interest. This season, they have launched another chic collection in must-have colours. Their creative frames, with great attention to details, includes this bold cobalt blue and dark grey design, with the colour combination a Blue Magic Eye exclusive. Matt acetate is contrasted with gold metal, and the frame shape is deftly sculpted into modern retro. Refined style, with elegant impact. www.bluemagiceye.com JG

The Super Conductor

KBL Eyewear

I spotted this design at Hall of Frames in Zurich, and found both the colour and the airy, weightlessness of the frame very appealing. Super Conductor, with its slightly oversized design, is crafted from milled stainless steel, for the ultimate in shape integrity and strength. World class polishing, hand enamelled acetate temple tips, and silicon nose pads are great details for perfect comfort and fit. The coolest and most innovative electric instrument on the planet, a 1960’s fender deluxe model bass, inspired the gentle mint colouration. A cool history for a cool frame! www.kbleyewear.com JG

O’Day

l.a.eyeworks

Legendary American jazz singer Anita O’Day is the inspiration for this classically proportioned circular shaped acetate frame in an array of vibrant colours. The black and bottle green split combination (above) is perfect for neo-preppies looking for heritage with a new twist. Designer Gai Gherardi says that watching the video with the elegant O’Day performing at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1957 prompted the frame concept. For a vintage treat, the performance can be viewed at:

Jean-Claude

Lunettes Kollektion

This subtle, coquettish frame with its flirty cat eye shape is a standout in the Lunettes Kollektion. Beautiful, honey coloured, original Italian acetate is crafted into this handmade frame, with quality details that include solid alpaca hinges and steel screws. The design captures the vintage look that continues to inspire, combined with modern aspects, including a lighter, playful look. Jean-Claude is a very Berlin-esque design – even the handsome frame case is handcrafted by noted Berlin box factory Gerhard Reich, a German tradition for fine cases since 1869. www.lunettes-kollektion.com JG

Austrian Designers

Klaus Huber at Robert La Roche

28th October 2011 The next stop on our Austrian eyewear tour is to meet Klaus Huber, designer at Robert La Roche, the iconic brand who has been creating statement frames since the 1970’s. Klaus shares his design philosophy with Eyestylist.

“My inspiration for designs is life – it means that I travel a lot. In doing so, I let myself be inspired by urban life, even by the city I am living in. Vienna gives me a special attitude towards Imperial life, the culture and arts of a modern global city. Coupled with the past, it is a perfect ‘Viennese mélange’ – a Viennese coffee mixture. My approach to design is, as with sculptors, working on mass, which is brought by condensation or rejuvenation, into flowing forms. For me, haptics (the science applying tactile touch), sensation and control, plus interaction with computer application, is very important; facets and sloping areas guarantee a special look. Even the surface of the frame is specially shaped, which requires the best manual skills. We produce in Europe/Japan to achieve optimum quality. But it is getting more and more difficult to obtain the highest standards with competitive prices.

“Of course, I love to work with acetate – it feels silky, soft and warm. It is the kind of material where you can feel the special process in our glasses. I try to take care of Robert La Roche’s heritage. I don’t see myself as a caretaker. I rather want to bring the spirit of the past into the present, and develop it further into the future.” www.robert-laroche.com JG
